Lunch Discussion

In the past we have come together to eat lunch and discuss an article on the intersection of mathematics and topics like gender, STEM education, equity, and diversity. Below we document the themes of these discussions.

Fall 2022

October 26, 2022 LGBTQ+ in Mathematics
We will discuss the article "Space for All: The Rise of LGBTQ+ Mathematics Conferences." The article can be found here.
September 22, 2022 To honor Hispanic Heritage Month,
We will discuss the podcast from Lathisma (Latinx and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences) which is an organization that showcases the contributions of the Latinx and Hispanic mathematicians. The transcript from the podcast interviewing Erika Camacheo from 2018 can be found here.

Spring 2021

Date Description
April 15, 2021 Towards a fully inclusive mathematical profession
We will discuss the recent findings of the American Mathematical Society's (AMS) recent report on racism in the AMS and in the mathematics profession. For the lunch discussion, please read the Preface, Executive Summary, and Chapter 1: Charges, Findings, and Recommendations. We will discuss how the report's findings could be implemented in our local mathematics community. The report can be found here.

The Association for Women in Mathematics' Executive Director, Karoline Pershell, will introduce the work she is doing at the AWM to implement institutional change, and then facilitate a discussion on understanding and managing workplace expectations. Attendees are invited to review two resources (listed below), and bring their reactions to the discussion.
February 7, 2020 Gender and Job Expectations in Academia
Join members of the AWM for a discussion about how gender influences expectations and special requests to those working in academia.
