Math Placement

Math placement begins Fall 2025.  For registration for Summer 2025, if you are receiving a prerequisite error on any of the self-placement classes, please submit a permission code request and we will get a code to you, assuming there are seats available in the class.  Thank you.

Your first math course at the University of Utah is based on your test scores (ACT Math, SAT Math, or ALEKS), concurrent enrollment or transfer math courses, and your chosen field of study.

ALEKS ASSESSMENT TOOL

ALEKS PPL is an assessment and resource tool that complements other test scores to place you into the best math class for you to start in at the University of Utah.  You may take up to three unproctored and up to two proctored ALEKS assessments in a year.  Taking the ALEKS assessment will open a set of learning modules tailored to you that you can use to fill in gaps or to learn more and try to place into a higher math class.  Unproctored practice ALEKS assessments can be taken at home and are not used for math placement. When you are ready to take a proctored ALEKS assessment for math placement, check back for more information on how to do that.  Proctored ALEKS assessments will be available soon.  The table below shows your placement into entry level math classes based on your test scores.

If you are not happy with your current placement into one of these introductory courses (by ACT or SAT score) you may take the ALEKS assessment to see if you are able to place into a higher course.  If you do not have another test score that can be used for placement, you must take the ALEKS assessment.

You have up to 3 hours to take the ALEKS assessment.  A calculator is provided within the ALEKS system.

Students should consult degree requirements when deciding which math course to enroll in and are encouraged to meet with their advisor if they have any questions about which course is best for their intended major.

TRANSFER COURSES

If you have a transfer math course and a U of U course equivalency doesn't show on your degree audit please submit the Transfer Course Evaluation Form.

AP AND IB SCORES

If you have AP or IB math scores, you can see course equivalencies on the Prior Learning Credit page of the Office of Admissions.

QL REQUIREMENT

Students graduating high school Spring 2017 or later with an ACT math score of at least 26 or an SAT math score of at least 640 will receive 3 credits and have the QL requirement waived (or QA requirement under the old general education requirements).  This does not serve as a prerequisite for other math classes or fill math course requirements in any particular major.

REGISTRATION ISSUES

If your prerequisite is not being recognized by the registration system (this can be a particular issue with transfer courses), you may request a permission code using the link on the math department’s Registration Issues page.
