University of Utah
Fall, 2008
Final Exam Information
The final exam will be in our standard classroom, LCB 219, on Thursday, December 18th from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The final exam will cover every section upon which we've had a homework assignment, along with section 14.1. It will not cover anything in chapter 14 after section 14.1.
You are allowed to use four pages of notes, standard size front and back, on the exam. You can also bring and use a calculator. No other outside material or help is allowed.
I will have office hours this week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. On Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM I'll be in the tutoring center. Announcements
- December 27th The final grades and final scores are calculated and will be posted this evening on Campus Information Systems. You can view your final grades on WebCT, along with all your scores as well. An explanation of how your final grade was calculated is here. Good luck in all you do. Thanks for a great class.
- December 12th Today was our last day of class. We did a few problems from the homework, and then I introduced line integrals. You will not be expected to know line integrals on the final. So, the only section in chapter 14 that you're expected to know is section 14.1. Also, the third exam was handed back today, and the 11th homework assignment was due.
- December 10th Today I was asked a problem from the homework that I more or less completely screwed up. I'll show you what to do, and what I did wrong, at the start of class on Friday. Needless to say that won't be the problem that is graded for the last homework. The explanation for how to do the problem, and what was wrong with my approach, is here. Also, it looks like we'll only get to section 14.2 before we run out of time. Sorry we fell so far behind.
- December 8th Today we began section 14.1. The final assignment will only be on one section, and it will be due this Friday, December 12th.
- December 3rd Today we went over the example from the textbook that we worked most of last time. We also went over a number of practice problems, and finished up the lecture notes for section 13.8.
- December 1st Today we went over a very long example from the textbook, which I screwed up on towards the very end. I'll go over in the beginning of class next time where it went wrong. Also, we discussed integrals in spherical coordinates and worked a couple of example problems. We'll work some more example problems during class on Wednesday. Also, the big news, as posted above, is that the exam has been moved back to Friday, December 5th and that we'll be having a review tomorrow at 6:00 PM in LCB 222. Also note that I've posted practice exams for exam 3 below.
- November 26th Today we finished section 13.7 and began section 13.8. Homework 9 was due today. Please note that homework 10 is now posted below. Also, remember that our third exam will be on Wednesday, December 3rd. I'll be hosting a review session on Tuesday, December 2nd, time to be announced.
- November 24th Today we worked a number of examples from the homework, and then a number of examples from section 13.7. We'll finish up section 13.7 on Wednesday, and start on section 13.8. Please note that the exam on Wednesday, December 3rd will cover chapter 13 sections 13.1 through 13.7, omitting section 13.5. Also, the exam will have material from section 12.9 on Lagrange multipliers. Also, assignment 9 is due on Wednesday. Finally, assignment 10 is now posted below. It is due on Friday, December 5th.
- November 21st Today we worked through most of the theory for section 13.7, and we did a few examples.
- November 19th Today we went over some examples and finished up section 13.6. We began on section 13.7, but didn't get too far. We'll be spending a few days working section 13.7 and 13.8 and doing a number of examples. Also, don't forget the Calculus Carnival tomorrow!
- November 17th Today we covered section 13.6 from the textbook. Assignment 9 will be posted tonight and will be due on Wednesday, November 26th, the last class before Thanksgiving break. It will cover sections 13.2, 13.3, and 13.4.
- November 14th Will Malone is covering section 13.4 for me today. Also, homework 8 is due today. It was posted on the webpage as due on Wednesday, but I announced in class that it's due today. Sorry I didn't change it on the webpage. Also, the third exam will be postponed until Wednesday, December 3rd. I'll be sending out an email about all this stuff. Also, don't forget, the Calculus Carnival is Thursday, November 20th.
- November 12th Today I handed back the exams. We covered section 13.3. I will not be in class on Friday, but there will be a substitute to cover section 13.4 for me.
- November 10th Unfortunately, I didn't finish grading exam 2 by today. Sorry. I'll have them done by next time. I promise. Today we finished section 13.1 and moved through section 13.2 as well. Next time we'll do sectio 13.3.
- November 7th Today we worked some problems from section 12.9 and finished section 13.1 except for one example. We'll finish up that example and cover section 13.2 in class next time. The notes for both sections are now posted (sorry they're late). Also, assignment 6 was handed back in class today. Remember that assignment 8 is due in class next Friday.
- November 5th Today we finished section 12.9 and began chapter 13. We discussed the idea behind multivariable integration and reviewed the concept of Riemann sums from single variable calculus. I also talked a little bit about the reasons why we study integrals in terms of Riemann sums first.
- November 3rd We covered most of the material from section 12.9 in class today. We'll finish the last bit on Wednesday. The second exam with solutions is now posted below. Don't forget to vote!
- October 31st We had our second exam in class today. Happy Halloween!
- October 29th Today we ended up reviewing problems all day. We'll start on section 12.9 on Monday. Today, we just worked problems from section 12.8. Remember, the review session for the exam is tomorrow evening, and the exam is next time (Friday) in class.
- October 27th Today we went over a few problems from the problem sets and began finished section 12.8. The exam on Friday will be on material from section 12.1 to 12.8. Also, we will be having a review session on Thursday, October 30th at 7:00 PM. I'll announce the room as soon as I know what it will be. Also, two practice exams are posted below. They're the second exams that I gave the last two times I taught this class, so there may be some material on the exams that you are not expected to know, or there may be material you are expected to know that does not appear on the practice exams. Caveat emptor.
- October 24th Today we began discussing section 12.8. That's about it.
- October 22nd Today we finished discussing section 12.7. We're behind schedule again, and so the date of the exam next week will be postponed from Wednesday until Friday. So, our second exam will be on Halloween. Homework 6 was due today, and I handed back assignment 5.
- October 20th Today we discussed some of the problems on homework 6, and covered about half of the section 12.7 notes. We should finish up those notes in class on Wednesday, and then start on section 12.8. Also, please remember that homework 6 is due in class on Wednesday. (Next time)
- October 8th Today I handed back the graded first exams. The grades have all been calculated and recorded online. We went over the notes for section 12.6. There is no class on October 10th.
- October 6th Today we finished our discussion of directional derivatives and gradient vectors. Assignment 5 was due. Assignment 6 will be out on Wednesday, and due the Wednesday after break. Also, the first exam is graded and the exam grades are posted on WebCT. The exams will be handed back in class on Wednesday. Finally, remember that we will not be having class on Friday.
- October 3rd Today we talked about directional derivatives and gradients. Also, the first exam will be graded and returned by Wednesday, October 8th.
- October 1st Today we finished our discussion about differentiability and tangent planes. We're again a little bit behind schedule, so if we don't catch up soon we may have to revise our schedule for the rest of the semester again.
- September 29th Today we finished our discussion about continuity, and discussed some basic concepts and definitions from metric topology. Finally, we went over the beginnings of the theory of differentiability for multivariable functions. Also, please note that grades for the third assignment are now online, and the third assignment will be returned in class next time. Also, the first exam should be graded and returned before fall break. Finally, I'm conducting midterm evaluations, so please fill out a midterm evaluation. The link for the website is at the top of this page.
- September 24th Today we discussed section 12.3 on limits and continuity, but only got through limits, and so we'll cover continuity on Monday. Also, there will be a review session tomorrow in JWB 333 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Our first exam will be on Friday. Also, a while ago somebody asked me if I could make copies of the homework problems, because he's using an old book. Sorry I forgot about that until today, but when I tried to make copies the quality wasn't good at all, so I just figured I'd type up the assignments. Note that the typed up assignments are set up so that, if you're so inclined, you could print them out and just write the solutions there. This is what I'll be doing for all future solution sets. Also please note that the second homework assignments has been graded, and the grades have been recorded, and the assignment was handed back in class today. I've also posted the solutions to the third homework assignment. Finally, I was asked about practice exams, and so I've posted the first exams covering chapter 11 from the previous two times I taught this class, along with solutions. These are posted below. Whew! That's a bunch of announcements.
- September 22nd Assignment 3 was due today, so if you did not hand that in during class please get it to me ASAP. The grader had not returned the assignment to me by class time, but I received it in the afternoon, and so your grades on the second assignment are now posted on WebCT. I'll hand back assignment 2 on Wednesday.
- September 19th Today we finished our discussion of section 11.9, and we moved into chapter 12, starting with section 12.1 and the concept of multivariable functions.
- September 17th Today we discussed section 11.9, and we will finish our discussion first thing on Friday. Also, please note that my office hours have been changed (hopefully for the last time) and these changes are now reflected on this webpage and in the updated syllabus. Also, the schedule has changed, and this is reflected in the updated syllabus, as well as in the schedule that has just recently been added to the webpage. Finally, an email was sent out informing students about my policy of having notes for exams. You will be allowed one standard size page, front and back, of notes for our first exam on September 26th.
- September 15th Today we finished section 11.8. Class last Friday we had Kelly MacArthur as a substitute. Thanks Kelly! Also, I announced assignments 3 and 4, which are posted below. Finally, please note that the date of our first quiz has been changed from Wednesday, September 17th to next Friday, September 26th.
- September 8th Today we finished section 11.4 on cross products, and began section 11.5 on vector-valued functions. I also gave a reminder in class today that homework 2 is due this Friday, not this Wednesday, and that I will not be teaching class on Friday, but there will be a substitute.
- September 5th Today we finished section 11.3, concerning ourselves mainly with planes, and their relation to the dot product. Next time we will finish up the section 11.4 notes on the cross product, and hopefully begin section 11.5. Also, today the first homework assignment was due, and the second homework assignment's due date was postponed.
- September 3rd Today we finished section 11.2, and began section 11.3 on the dot product. The notes with solutions for section 11.3 are below, along with the notes for section 11.4. Also, the problems for the second assignment are enumerated below.
- August 29th Sorry to be so late in updating the webpage. Today, we finished talking about section 11.1, and got about half way through section 11.2. Because we did not finish section 11.2, our first homework assignment's due date is postponed until Friday, September 5th.
- August 27th Today we had our first lecture on material from the course, and we covered most of section 11.1. On Friday we will be finishing this section, and also covering section 11.2, for which the lecture notes are posted below. The solutions to the example problems from the lecture notes are also posted below. Please note that the first assignment is now posted, and it is due on Wednesday, September 3rd. Also please note that if you want to use the lecture notes to follow along during lecture you will be from here on our expected to print them out yourself from this webpage and bring them to class. I will hopefully always from here on out have the lecture notes for a given lecture posted by the time of the lecture before it. So, for example, I hope to have the lecture notes for the September 3rd lecture prepared and posted by this Friday.
- August 25th Today was our first class period. It was an introductory lecture where we disucssed administrative aspects of the class and I gave an overview of the subject matter. Covering the material begins on Wednesday. Also, please note that my office hours have changed from those announced on Monday. They are now as posted on the webpage, and the syllabus posted on the webpage reflects this change.
