Course Description:
The purpose of this course is the rigorous development of the calculus
of one variable, starting from a rigorous develoment of the real
numbers. The emphasis of the course will be on proofs,
A lot of time will be spent on understanding and practicing how to
write proofs. After a careful discussion of the real numbers, the basic
theorems of calculus will be proved. We should cover most of the first
six chapters of the text
Homework:
Homework will be assigned weekly, will be collected on Tuesdays and
graded.
Doing the homework is the most important part of the course. Please do
not hesitate to get any help you need in doing the homework. Feel free
to come to my office to get help. I should always be
there during my office hours, and would be glad to talk to you at any
other time you can find me. Do not hesitate to make an appointment with
me if you cannot come during a scheduled office hour.
Problem Session: Tuesdays, beginning September 2, will be
devoted to discussing the homework problems due that day. Come prepared
to present
solutions to problems on the board.
Midterms: I will give two midterms, on September 24 and
November 5.
Quizes: There will be a short weekly quiz on definitions and
statements
of main theorems, every Wednesday starting September 10.
Final examination: Tuesday, December 16, 8:00 Ð 10:00 AM.
Grading: For each person I will drop the three lowest homework
scores, the three lowest quiz scores, and the course grade will be
based on the total score computed as follows:
Quiz 10%
Homework 30%
Midterms 30%
Final 30%
For the quiz score all quizes will count equally, same goes for
the homework score. If you have taken both midterms, most quizes, and
handed in most of the
homework, then your grade will be based on the higher of the total
score and the final. Otherwise your grade will be based on the total
score.
