- 29 Apr, Final Exam Review
- 30 Apr, Reading day
- Changes to the original plans for HW collections. No change to exam topics.
Sections 6.3, 6.4, 9.1. 9.2. 9.3. 9.4, 9.5, 9.6 are extra credit applied
to the whole semester. My plan was to give enough free time to learn well
the topics in chapters 1-7. We don't do ch8, by design. I could do 9.1-9.3
in the lecture days left, but I feel the time is better spent on review
of ch1-7.
Exams slowed us down by 2 lecture days. Adding the Putzer method and
applications took one more lecture day. If there is a need for a Final Exam
Review [2 hours] on Thu-Fri of the last week of classes, then that can
happen. Otherwise, I will hold office hours those days instead.
Maple L6 is required.
Maple L7 is extra credit applied to the whole semester.
About 4 people so far have done 9.1, 9.2 problems
and I am glad for that, because the result is some progress on Fourier series.
- Chapter 4 problems and hints. This is a study-yourself chapter,
with the problems the only evidence that you read it.
- 10 Mar, 4.1: 2, 27. 4.1-2: See Ex 4, p 249. 4.1-27: See Ex 3, p 248.
- 11 Mar, 4.2: 8, 34. 4.2-8: Use the Laplace resolvent formula,
(s I -A)L(u)=u0 + L(F). 4.2-24: Subtract the equations to get x+y=t^2-t.
The first equation then reads (t^2-t)' + 2(t^2-t)=t, which is false.
Conclude there is no solution.
4.2-34: Solve the equations in problem 4.1-26, using Laplace resolvent method,
or Cayley-Hamilton method. The latter is the same as the method of elimination
in section 4.2.
- 13 Mar, 4.3: 10, 17. Please skip these, there is no time for the
numerical topics.
- 31 Mar, MapleLab3: L3.2, L3.3, L3.4,
- 31 Mar, MapleLab4: L4.2, L4.3, L4.4,
- 01 Apr, midterm 2, last 4 problems.
See the web site for a solution key to all problems on last week's exam.

Week 16, May 1-8
Final exam period.
6 May, Final Exam, 7:30-10:00am, regular classroom.
Policy on Dailies: The highest 150 dailies will be
counted. The lowest 8 of the 158 dailies will be
dropped. Any record with less than 70 daily scores
earns a grade of E, regardless of midterm and
final exam scores. Deadlines set at web site
http://www.math.utah.edu/~gustafso/. Work not in
the stack sent to the assistant is late and it
earns a grade of zero. Zeros can be erased by
doing extra credit problems.
Policy on Exams: The final exam is doubled before
determining the exam average, to count like two
midterms.
Grading Scale: A~ = 95-100, A- = 92-94, B+ =
88-91, B~ = 84-87, B- = 80-83, C+ = 75-79, C~ =
65-74, C- = 60-64.
Final Grade: 0.7(exam ave) + 0.3(dailies ave)
