Text: Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher
The book is available online at the link if you don't want to purchase a hard copy.
Course description: This will be a standard graduate course in
algebraic topology. I plan to cover chapters 0-3 of the
books (omitting some topics). In the unlikely event there is time we may cover some topics
in chapter 4. The course will prepare students for the algebraic topology half of the department's geometry/topology qualifying exam.
Homework: There will be
regularly assigned homework some of which I will grade.

Final: The final exam will be a timed take-home exam due by the end of the day on May 6. I will give it to you an envelope and you should do in any two hour period of your choosing. It will be a
replica of the algebraic topology half of the prelim.
Grades: Grades will be determined by your homework and final exam. For graduate students preparing to take the qualifying exam if I believe you have a strong chance of passing the exam I will give you an A. If you do the homework and final but I am concerned about your chances of passing you will recieve an A-. If you are not an either category you will recieve a lower score based on my discretion depending on how much work you have put in and how much you have seem to have learned. Undergraduates should speak with me about grading for the course.
